While the Keynote where the introduction of USB-C ports for future iPhones should be announced is coming quickly. Our colleague Chance Miller from 9to5Mac had the brilliant idea to remind us of our time with the Lightning. There’s a feeling of nostalgia in the air!

On September 12, 2012, the Cupertino company announced the arrival of the iPhone 5. And for the occasion, a brand new port has appeared: Lightning. At the time, the Apple company was aware of the resistance that this announcement would provoke. This is why Phil Schiller wanted to present things as they should during this conference.
To introduce this new cable to the general public, Apple’s vice-president of marketing first spoke about the evolution of the Internet and the tools that accompany it. Reminding us that times have changed, that what was once done by cable could now be done wirelessly. Evoking in particular iTunes synchronization, the Bluetooth connection to the speakers, or even that of AirPlay with Wi-Fi. All these uses which now seem completely banal to us were at the time of major advances.
His argument was to say that if all this had evolved, why not the cable: “A lot of things have changed and it’s time for the connector to evolve. And that’s exactly what we did. »
Did Phil Schiller foresee USB-C?
Apple’s vice president of marketing introduced the connector as the connector “of the next decade”. Did he foresee that a cable change would be looming for the following decade? Maybe Apple had a technology other than USB-C in the pipeline, who knows…
After that, the director focused on the Lightning’s main strengths, namely:
- The fact that he is reversible
- Its size, it is 80% smaller than its predecessor
- Better durability
Despite the advantages brought by this novelty, fears concerning its adaptability to accessories fitted with the previous connector were not long in coming. Of course, Apple had planned this and directly announced an adapter allowing accessories with the old connector to be linked to Lightning.
After recalling these memories, we are even more excited to see how the future USB-C connector will be presented at the Keynote on September 12.
