The structural battery created by researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden is capable of increasing the range of current electric cars by 70%
It seems quite obvious that electric cars are the future, but for these vehicles to replace those that use fossil fuels they need to have batteries that are lighter and can supply large amounts of energy. Over the last few months we have discovered different alternatives to classic lithium batteries such as a water battery that promises to offer twice the performance of traditional ones either a zinc-ion battery that is safer and cheaper to manufacture than lithium-ion.
Now, Swedish scientists have created a battery that could change the rules of the game forever, as it is much thinner than the current ones and promises to revolutionize the autonomy of both electric cars and smartphones.
This is the revolutionary battery that will make it possible to manufacture mobile phones the size of a credit card
A group of researchers from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden led by Leif Asp, professor of Mechanics of Materials and Computation, Industrial and Materials Science, have published a study in the journal “ADVANCED MATERIALS” which explains how they have managed to create an innovative structural battery that “It is as rigid as aluminum and dense enough to be used commercially”.
These scientists from the aforementioned Swedish University published a research in 2018 that revealed how rigid and strong carbon fibers could chemically store electrical energysomething that meant that these could perform the same function as the electrodes in lithium ion batteries.
Later, in 2021, this group of researchers achieved that this revolutionary battery made of carbon fibers had an energy density of 24 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg)which is approximately 20% of the capacity of a comparable lithium-ion battery.
Well, today, these scientists have achieved increase the density of your structural battery up to 30 Wh/kg. Although this figure is still much lower than that of current lithium batteries, the truth is that this new battery weighs much less, something that makes it does not require as much energy to operate.
This allows it to be integrated into much thinner devices, being able to mount it on a smartphone the size of a credit card and that it has a much greater autonomy than current batteries. For example, in the case of electric cars, this innovative battery promises increase your autonomy by up to 70%something that would mean a real revolution for the electric vehicle sector.
“Investing in lightweight, energy-efficient vehicles is a natural fit if we want to save energy and think about future generations. We have done calculations on electric cars that show they could drive up to 70 percent further than today if they had competitive structural batteries.”
To market their structural battery, these researchers have created a company called Chalmers Venture Sinonus ABwhich is based in the Swedish city of Borås, but, as Asp himself has confirmed, there is still a lot of work to do to get the cells of this revolutionary battery beyond small scale laboratory manufacturing to large scale productionwhich is the previous step so that this battery can reach our smartphones and electric vehicles.
