Finding ways to communicate with your future self is certainly not a new idea. So far, such attempts have been limited to reminding the real older self of the younger self, for example through letters or diary entries.
AI chatbot simulates older self
Researchers at MIT now have developed an AI chatbotthanks to which users should be able to communicate with their future selves now. At best, the – simulated – older self should be able to give the younger one valuable advice and thus have a positive influence on his or her life.

To reinforce the impression that you are chatting with an older self, the other person receives their own profile picture – an artificially aged version of the user’s image. The system is fed by a range of information that users provide about their lives, families, experiences, wishes and (professional) dreams.
Extensive artificial memories
This is to ensure that the Chatbot can rely on the background story in his answers and tips and remains plausible, like that Guardian writes. A large language model then creates extensive artificial memories from this information.
In one example, a prospective biology teacher is said to have asked her 60-year-old future self about the most fulfilling moment of her professional career. The answer: The now-retired teacher remembered a special event in which she helped a student improve his grades. Or in the words of the AI chatbot: “It was so nice to see the student’s face beaming with pride and success.”
With different questions you should also be able to query different alternative paths in life. According to MIT, users should not be tied to the fact that their older self had a particular career.
MIT wants to encourage behavioral changes
“The goal is to encourage long-term thinking and behavioral changes,” said Pat Pataranutaporn, who is on Project Future You works at the Media Lab at MIT. That, the MIT researcher says, could motivate people to make smarter decisions now that affect their long-term well-being and future lives.
In an accompanying study in which 344 volunteers took part, showed upthat after such a conversation they felt less anxious and more connected to their older self. This could certainly lead to you making “smarter” decisions from time to time with a view to your own future.
