The trick with the QR code
The year is 2020, Apple is struggling with major problems with Chinese suppliers Lens Technology and Biel Crystal. A failure rate of 30 percent in the production of displays for the iPhone costs the company hundreds of millions – according to a new article by The Informant (Paywallvia Apple Insider), which now provides an interesting look behind the scenes.
In order to deal with the problem in display production, Apple began investing millions in hidden marking technology in 2020. Accordingly, there are two QR codes on all iPhone screens produced in the last three years, which are placed at different points in production.
Two sources want to confirm to The Information that one of the codes consists of a matrix of 625 dots that are laser-embedded into the glass of the display. During development, this approach is said to have initially led to problems with the stability of the glass, but these were overcome with the use of “special microscopic lenses”. How exactly Apple uses the codes to trace the production chain is not known. However, the report claims that after introducing the information embedded in the glass, the company was able to reduce the error rate in display production from the two suppliers mentioned to 10 percent.
