According to Financial Times which reported the affair just a few hours ago, SoftBank could ultimately invest no less than a billion dollars in a secret collaboration between OpenAI and LoveFrom. The project could take the form of a new company, distinct from the latter two. It would be a question of a product aiming to revolutionize artificial intelligence, as for example the iPhone did in 2007 with the mobile market. As a reminder, it was Jony Ive, CEO of the communications agency LoveFrom, who designed the design of the device.
OpenAI, for its part, would have directly mandated its director Sam Altman to lead the negotiations. The thirty-eight-year-old American is notably behind the success of the ChatGPT app, but also of the Y Combinator startup accelerator. From its ranks came Airbnb, Dropbox, Reddit and Algolia – to name just a few.
A product dedicated to individuals
In all likelihood, the product that OpenAI and LoveFrom will develop will not be particularly dedicated to professionals. However, its design would still be in its infancy, for the moment. THE Financial Times even explains that consumers may have to wait several more years before discovering the results of this new partnership. Ive and Altman seem keen to unveil a particularly striking device, as when Apple presented the Vision Pro mixed reality headset.
With this, it is rumored that Masayoshi Son, at the head of SoftBank’s Vision Fund, would have particularly highlighted the capabilities of his founder ARM within the framework of this project. As a reminder, Apple, again, already uses the company’s technology to design its own chips. Its frame is also powered by a proprietary architecture based on this know-how, within the framework of the M2 and R1 chips.
Case to follow
No additional information has been published yet, and the main stakeholders have not reacted. Ive also knows how to hold his tongue, as demonstrated by his experience with Apple’s very strict confidentiality policy.
OpenAI could soon be valued at $90 billion, which would position it between 151st and 154th position in the ranking of the largest public capitalizations on the planet. To date, however, the capital remains private.
In short :
- OpenAI and Jony Ive are preparing a product with artificial intelligence
- The device is not likely to be released for several years
- SoftBank would invest a billion dollars, and ARM would take care of the processor
