Since January 2023 and as an exceptional measure, the Ministry of Transport offers the possibility of travel for free on Renfe, whether Cercanías/Rodalies or medium distance. It was done through a quarterly payment that was extended until this moment. However, it seems that there will be no extension until 2024.

There are already several sources that suggest that Minister Óscar Puente himself is not in favor of renewing these subscriptions. As things stand, everything would end on December 31st. Requirements for the Cercanías/Rodalies pass

There is still the possibility of not only traveling for free on Cercanías/Rodalies, but also of requesting a pass. In fact, it has been like this since last September 1 and until December 31, 2024. It can be requested even that day, although given the requirements for the number of minimum trips, it is recommended to request it now.

A deposit of 10 euros must be paid which will be recovered from January 1, 2025 if the rest of the conditions of use have been met.
You can travel with the pass until December 31.
At least 16 trips must be made from now until the aforementioned December 31 so that the payment is valid and the deposit can be returned. A complete trip is considered when the ticket is validated at a station turnstile to enter and validated again to exit.
You can have the subscription in physical format with a card or with a QR in the mobile app. If it is issued digitally, it can be converted to a physical card at the stations, although there will be no turning back and the QR will be canceled (you cannot have both).
The fertilizer must be kept until the deposit is returned, this being proof in case it has to be claimed.

How to request the Cercanías/Rodalies pass on iPhone

Download the ‘Renfe Cercanías’ app in the App Store.
Open the app and log in (or register).
Display the side menu and click on ‘Buy tickets’.
Click now on ‘Buy’.
Choose a source station and a destination station. The subscription will be used for all the intermediate stations that form the nucleus you choose.
Select ‘Ab. Recurring’ in the rates drop-down menu.
On the subscription start date, choose September 1, 2024.
Click on ‘Buy’.
Accept the conditions, enter your ID and choose the payment method you prefer to pay the 10 euro deposit.
Click on ‘Pay’.
