New anti-theft protection in Android
Like tech journalist Mishaal Rahman in one Post on threads According to reports, Google appears to have started rolling out new security features to Android devices. Rahman’s message shows the supposed screen of his Xiaomi 14T Pro, on which the three new features called “Detection Lock”, “Offline Device Lock” and “Remote Lock” can be seen.
Google had already presented the functions in May and in one Blog article described on their website. Now, however, their distribution appears to be on Android smartphones to have started. Other users also confirm this.
Three functions for increased security
Detection Lock is an AI-supported function that intervenes the moment a device is stolen. To do this, Detection Lock recognizes “a typical movement that is associated with theft” and locks the phone immediately. According to Google, these movements are those made “when someone grabs your phone from your hand and tries to run away or ride a bike or car away.”
Offline Device Lock, on the other hand, “automatically locks your screen to protect your data, even when your device is not connected to the network”. According to Google, this is what happens when a thief tries to disconnect the smartphone from the Internet for a longer period of time. Unfortunately, Google does not go into detail about how the function recognizes such a case.
With Remote Lock, a stolen device can be locked with just your cell phone number and a short “security challenge.” Any other device can be used for this. Unfortunately, what this challenge looks like exactly is not revealed. It may be a security question or another password.
Distribution and requirements
Because the distribution of new security features is gradual, some users will gain access sooner than others. It is also possible that not all three features are available at the same time. Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock require at least Android 10. Remote Lock, however, works from Android 5.
