16 generations of iPhone, 3 special editions, 38 models in total… The history of the iPhone is rich. Some models were able to mark their era, others were quickly forgotten. This ranking looks back on the history of the iPhone, subjectively.
Tuesday September 12Apple will unveil theiPhone 15. A misleading name, since it is not the 15th generation of iPhone, but from the 17th (“S” models created offsets). In total, since 2007 and the very first iPhone, Apple has released 38 different iPhone models. All Apple smartphone owners necessarily have their favorite, like evidenced by the hundreds of responses we received on.
What is the iPhone that most marked its time? Which one disappointed the most? In this ranking, Numerama looks back at the history of the iPhone, in a subjective order that does not take itself too seriously. Some models are unanimous, others divide.
The ranking of the best iPhones
1. iPhone 5s (2013)
L’iPhone 5s unanimously. This is the first iPhone with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, the first iPhone with 4G with all French operators and undeniably the best smartphone of its time. The iPhone 5s has remained the benchmark to beat for years, due to its versatility and design quality. It’s also the last of the small iPhones (4 inches), before Apple decides to think bigger. The Mbappé of iPhones.
2. iPhone X (2017)
On paper, theiPhone is perfectible. It is not the most durable of the iPhones, its camera was worse than that of the competitors, it only came in one size and its minimum price, of 1,159 euros, hurt. Yet, for many, it is the most iconic iPhone in history. It must be said that with its edge-to-edge design, its OLED screen, its gestures in place of the home button and Face ID, it has led the way for several years. The iPhone X marked its era.
3. iPhone 4 (2010)
The iPhone 4 was the first iPhone with a new design. Glass on the back, flat edges… It also brought the first Apple chip (the A4) and the first Retina screen, with its invisible pixels, which changed the industry. He is also remembered for his many controversies, such as Antennagate (with the case offered by Apple) or the prototype forgotten in a barwhich had greatly irritated the brand… An anthology smartphone.
4. iPhone 4s (2011)
Less ambitious than the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4s was nevertheless remembered. Faster, better in photography and, above all, the first Apple device to carry thevoice assistant Siri… Without going overboard, the iPhone 4s has become a smartphone that is difficult to forget.
5. iPhone (2007)
Forever the first. How to forget the one without whom it all began ? So of course, the first iPhone may seem ridiculous today (no App Store, no wallpaper, no copy and paste, no MMS, no 3G, etc.), but its two-tone design is still recognizable 16 years later. This is a product that has caused a societal revolution, even David Pujadas talked about it.
6. iPhone SE (2016)
Apple’s first “affordable” iPhone. At 489 euros, theiPhone SE took the design of the iPhone 5s, with an iPhone 6s chip. A good compromise, which allowed fans of small Apple smartphones to not have to opt for the large models too quickly. Future SEs became bigger and therefore lost part of their audience.
7. iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini (2020 and 2021)
After years with large smartphones, Apple tried to bring back small formats in 2020, with the iPhone 12 mini. After two generations which did not see sales take off, Apple finally gave up. Part of its clientele continues to swear by 13 mins today, with a lump in her stomach whenever she thinks about replacing it with a larger model.
8. iPhone 11 Pro / 11 Pro Max (2019)
After several years without major progress, Apple has taken a leap forward with theiPhone 11 Pro, who has made clear progress in photography. This is also the last iPhone with a rounded design, before the return of flat edges. It is above all for its autonomy that we remember the iPhone 11 Pro, since it broke records by becoming the most enduring smartphone on the market. The end of a 12-year ordeal for Apple fans, who were finally able to live without an external battery.
9. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (2014)
At the start of 2014, Apple was the only manufacturer on the market to only offer small phones. The iPhone 6 changed that, with two different sizes (4.7 and 5.5 inches, which was huge at the time). Only flaw: it’s better not to sit on it, it bends.
10. iPhone 12 (2020)
A good value for money iPhone with an OLED screen, 5G (a first for Apple!) and a new design in line with that of the iPhone 5. It’s hard not to like the 12. The “affordable” iPhone that reconciled us with “affordable” iPhones.
11. iPhone 12 Pro, 13 Pro and 14 Pro (2020, 2021 and 2022)
Three for the price of one. Following on from the iPhone 11 Pro, Apple has improved its Pro range with ever more durable products, even better in photos, with crazy screens and firepower. Three golden generations, available in two sizes (Pro Max model), with the pleasant surprise of Dynamic Islandwhich appeared with theiPhone 14 Pro. Truly complete devices.
12. iPhone 5 (2012)
The iPhone 5 is the first iPhone with a slightly larger screen (4 inches instead of 3.5). If the iPhone 5s stole its place in our hearts, since it was more powerful and equipped with a Touch ID sensor, the iPhone 5 brought a fresh face to Apple. It’s also the first iPhone with a Lightning port until, probably, the iPhone 15. Only flaw: its black color which faded much too quickly.
13. iPhone 13 (2021)
In 13, theiPhone 13. Undoubtedly one of the most complete consumer iPhones, with too few differences from the 13 Pro for us not to recommend it. Even its successor, the iPhone 14, did not do better. A sure value!
14. iPhone 6s and 6s Plus (2015)
For some reason beyond our understanding, the iPhone 6s is divisive. Some people make it their favorite iPhone (it’s an improved iPhone 6, at the same time), others see it as a useless generation, with diminishing battery life. A good mid-table iPhone.
15. iPhone SE (2020)
A iPhone 8 with the chip of an iPhone 11a second successful iteration of the formula imagined in 2016. A little expensive compared to the competition on Android, but a convincing product for lovers of the home button.
16. iPhone 3GS (2008)
The third iPhone brought a lot of interesting things. Much faster than the two previous models, equipped with a camera capable of filming and, above all, the first iPhone with multitasking (thanks to the iOS 4 update), the 3GS was an interesting development. But the iPhone 4 quickly made it obsolete.
17. iPhone XR (2018)
The iPhone XR is a divisive product. Some loved it for its colors, others hated it because of its LCD screen and big bezels. It was still an affordable iPhone for the time, with the design of the iPhone
18. iPhone 11 (2019)
The iPhone 11 is an improved iPhone XR. It does a little better, but retains the same flaws. Ugh.
19. iPhone Xs and Xs Max (2018)
Like the iPhoneiPhone Xs could be improved. But unlike him, he was not revolutionary. An iPhone that we quickly forgot, even if the Xs Max model was great thanks to its good battery life.
20. iPhone 7 (2016)
The iPhone 7 was a very good smartphone, but we felt that Apple was starting to slow down before the iPhone X the year after. It owes its poor place in this ranking to its jet black version, which scratched so quickly that we didn’t dare touch it. As fragile as Neymar.
21. iPhone 3G (2008)
Instant confession: the iPhone 3G is the author of this article’s first iPhone. It’s therefore difficult to be too mean to it, even if we must recognize that its plastic design and its few new features compared to the first iPhone have not made history. 3G is its only real big new feature.
22. iPhone 8 and 8 Plus (2017)
iPhones born out of fashion, in the shadow of the X announced the same day. THE iPhone 8 aren’t bad iPhones, but they didn’t make anyone want to face Apple’s new monster.
23. iPhone 14 and 14 Plus (2022)
Latest iPhones to date, the iPhone 14 were unable to differentiate themselves from the iPhone 13 (even their chip has not changed). THE 14 More also missed its target, because of its very high price. A somewhat useless generation, which we can’t wait to see replaced.
24. iPhone SE (2022)
L’iPhone SE from 2022 makes fun of the world a little. Unlike the 2020 model, it has not changed its design. Its only new feature is its more powerful chip, with 5G compatibility. The rest is the same… but more expensive. Hard to recommend a product with an 8 year outdated design. Looking forward to the SE of 4th generation.
25. iPhone 5c (2011)
With its iPhone 5c, Apple thought it could attack the mid-range sector. Colorful and plastic, with an official shell with holes (what a bad idea), the iPhone 5c was a commercial success, but never won over Apple fans. He never had a successor and the public forgot him.
What place will the iPhone 15 occupy in this ranking? Response in a few weeks, when we have tested them.
