We try the BMW X2 sDrive18d, the cheapest of the X2.
A coupe SUV with more space than a family car
With the second generation of the X2, BMW is finally making things clear: like the X4 and X6, this time it is an “SUV coupé”. The X2 gains a more dynamic appearance, as well as a more imposing image compared to the previous generation. The X2 is now 4.55 m long5.4 cm more than the X1 on which it is based.
Compared to the X1 from which it is derived, the X2 is also 5 cm higher, while its roof is 4 cm lower. Beyond its measurements, it sports a specific design for the calender, which can be illuminatedwith pointed angles, stretched headlights, a pronounced roof line and, above all, large taillights that extend over the tailgate and wings. Far from being universally acclaimed, this X2 seems less balanced than its predecessor.
Inside, the X2 has adopted the same dashboard as the X1, with a large dual-screen digital panel, a 10.25-inch instrument panel and a 10.7 inch touch screen which houses the multimedia system and the browser. The latter works smoothly and comfortably. There is also a large floating console, with plenty of storage space.
The latter brings together the essentials of driving, with the tiny gear lever, a shortcut to disconnect annoying state-of-the-art driving aids, such as the ISAand radio volume control. And although it seems to us that the central touch screen contains a few extra functions, BMW has nevertheless refined its multimedia system enough for us to quickly become familiar with it.

In the end, it is much more effective than leaving it perched on a center console. No longer dancing in the curves from one side to the other and does not leave its place. Little fun and a lot of comfort behind the wheel
Our test unit sported the M-Sport finish, with magnificent optional 21-inch wheels. They are perfect for filling the wheel arches and improving aesthetics, but, as expected, they reduce comfort, especially when negotiating bumps, which are especially noticeable despite the presence of an adaptive M suspension that reduces the ground clearance. floor by 15 mm, while trying to maintain a good level of general comfort.
On the other hand, we must highlight the effective aerodynamic noise isolation, which makes trips very relaxing. It is a really refined model, especially since it is a diesel. Without a doubt, the option of “acoustic glass” that our car was equipped with has contributed to this good feeling.
On a dynamic level, it does not disappoint either, but without being sporty, no matter how many “M” logos the car displays. The steering offers ideal firmness and allows the X2 to corner with precision and relative speed. However, it suffers from a surge of torque in the steering column when accelerating a little hard, because let’s not forget that this X2 is not a rear-wheel drive, but a front-wheel drive. This also leads to an understeering temperament, not very marked, but definitely present.
The dual clutch automatic gearbox and seven speeds contributes to the ease of driving in the city, and shines even more on the highway. Smooth when driving at a leisurely pace and very reactive when power is needed, without taking the engine to unnecessary high revs in Sport mode, it seems to read the driver’s mind and makes it unnecessary to use the steering wheel paddles.
The X2 offers a good balance between comfort and dynamism, although with a slight advantage for comfort. It is, in short, a good family car. And it is something that transcends even more with its ridiculously low consumption.
Throughout the test, with a mixed route of 1,000 km between highways and the city, practically in a 60/40 ratio, this diesel average of 4.4 l/100 km. That is more than half a liter per hundred less than the approved average consumption of 5.1 l/100 km.
BMW X2: prices and rivals
The coupe SUV segment of this size remains a hunting ground reserved for the German premium trio. He Audi Q3 Sportback (from 49,100 euros for the 35 TDi S-Tronic with 150 HP) and the Mercedes GLA 200d (48,053 euros) will be the main alternatives to the new X2.
In both cases the level of comfort is high, with the Audi having a more classic touch on board compared to the X2 and the Mercedes GLA, much more classic in its exterior design. In any case, neither of them offers as much space on board and a trunk as big as the BMW.
Although the BMW X2 sDrive18d is not exactly a cheap car, from 46,200 eurosat least it is not particularly stingy with its standard equipment, but it is not generous either.
Thus, the standard finish includes 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, 40/20/40 folding rear seat with center armrest, multifunction leather sports steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, active lane change alert, electric tailgate, start keyless, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, as well as touch screen compatible Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
However, our test unit looked M Sport finish, from 50,874 euros. This includes a body kit and 19-inch wheels, as well as partial Alcantara upholstery, paddle shifters, aluminum inserts, wraparound front seats, M adaptive suspension lowered by 15 mm and anthracite-colored interior lining on the roof.
Of course, with our highly personalized test unit it is easy for the car to reach a price worthy of a model in the X3 range. The installed options include 21-inch wheels (1,538 euros), Portimao blue (1,043 euros) and a whole series of packages.
These are the Premium Package, which incorporates the vertical wireless charging tray and the acoustic comfort glasses, among others, and the Innovation Package (4,781 euros) which includes, for example, the head-up display, the navigator with augmented reality and the BMW ‘Iconic Glow’ backlit grille. Result, a unit worth more than 60,000 euros.
